SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY AT THE INCLUSIVE HUB

Since 2022 we have worked with Liverpool John Moores University every year providing five sport psychology students a 9-week placement at the Inclusive Hub.

Each student visited the Inclusive Hub twice a week to experience a variety of the sessions available. We took an active role in the running of the sessions to ensure that we built a rapport with the users of the Inclusive Hub and had a chance to apply some of our sport psychology knowledge. Our aims of the placement were to observe examples of good sports psychology practice as well as develop our own knowledge and skills in this area.

CLASSES

The Inclusive Hub offers a range of sessions and facilities that the participants get to choose from. The sessions are set up for people with all abilities, ensuring that everyone there finds something to suit their interests and needs. The Inclusive Hub offers a wide range of sessions, ranging from physical sessions to non-physical talking therapy groups. They also offer a sensory room to help children with their visual and auditory processing, as well as providing a space to help them relax.

WELL-BEING

All of the sessions are designed to ensure that all participants have a great time. There are always fun and competitive activities that leave the participants feeling much better about themselves. The sessions are also designed by the coaches to ensure that the participants get a psychological benefit as well as a physical benefit. Confidence is a major focus of the Inclusive Hub with members being encouraged every session to step outside of their comfort zone and test their boundaries.

These 3 areas of the Inclusive Hub are supported by sport psychology literature. A theory called Self-Determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) found them to be essential psychological needs required for humans to be motivated to grow and change.
